Background Remover
Cut out product photos and portraits with an AI model that runs on your own device. Process a batch, touch up the edges, and download transparent PNGs.
Tips for clean cutouts
Contrast helps
Photograph products against a plain background that's a different colour from the item. Even lighting with soft shadows gives the cleanest edges.
Keep it in focus
Sharp edges are easier to separate than blurry ones. Fill most of the frame with the subject, but don't crop it off at the edges.
Touch up, then batch
Check one image closely and fix it with the brushes, then use the same background and padding for the whole set so your listings match.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded?+
No. The AI model runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device. The only downloads are the model itself (about 115 MB, from Hugging Face) and the ONNX Runtime engine (from jsDelivr), both fetched once and saved in your browser.
Why is the first run slow?+
The model has to download once. After that it loads from your browser's storage. Processing takes a second or two per image on computers with WebGPU (recent Chrome and Edge), and about a minute per image on the slower WebAssembly fallback.
Can I remove the background from many photos at once?+
Yes — add up to 20 images and process them in one go. Download them all as a ZIP with the same background, padding and edge settings, so a set of product photos matches.
The edges aren't quite right. Can I fix them?+
Yes. Use Erase to remove leftover background and Restore to bring back parts of the subject, with undo. “Soften edges” smooths the outline. Hair, fur, glass and objects that match the background are the hardest cases.
Which model does it use, and can I use the results commercially?+
BiRefNet-lite, a published research model whose code and weights are released under the MIT licence, which allows commercial use. You're responsible for having the rights to the photos you edit.
What format should I download?+
PNG keeps the transparent background — use it for logos, collages and marketplaces that accept transparency. JPG doesn't support transparency, so it's flattened onto white or your chosen colour, which suits most product listings.
It says my device isn't supported.+
The model needs a modern browser and several hundred MB of memory. Very old phones and some low-memory devices can't run it — try a computer with an up-to-date Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
